Science Sunday

Four findings that will still matter in 20 years
1 Scientists put a hard number on the maximum human lifespan. Even if you eliminated every reversible cause of aging, 156 years is roughly the ceiling.
A new mathematical model identifies the biological constraint that most longevity research quietly sidesteps: neurons and heart cells cannot divide or replace themselves, and they accumulate irreversible DNA damage over time at a rate that cannot be stopped by any currently conceivable intervention. Organs that regenerate, like the liver, could theoretically function for thousands of years given ideal conditions. But the brain and heart set a ceiling that no amount of other intervention can raise. The model puts that ceiling at roughly 156 years, making it one of the first attempts to quantify where the hard biological limit actually sits.
2 Bombardier's Global 8000 flew from Los Angeles to Farnborough in under nine hours at Mach 0.93, setting a new city-pair record.
The flight marked the aircraft's public debut at the 2026 Farnborough International Airshow, with the record set under challenging wind conditions along the route. With a top speed of Mach 0.95 and a range of 8,000 nautical miles, the Global 8000 is the fastest civil aircraft in production since the Concorde retired. What took the Concorde supersonic to achieve, Bombardier is doing just below it — which is the part that makes the comparison interesting rather than obvious.
3 Orcas off Baja California have developed a coordinated ramming technique for hunting ocean sunfish, and scientists believe they are teaching it to each other.
The ocean sunfish is the world's largest bony fish, and its thick skin makes it nearly impossible to bite through. The pod off Baja found a different approach: coordinated high-speed ramming that fragments the carcass into edible pieces. Scientists believe the behavior is culturally transmitted — passed between individuals through observation rather than instinct — which would make it a documented example of non-human cultural innovation. Watch the footage here.
4 A two-year-old all-white humpback whale named Mahina was photographed alongside her mother, producing one of the rarest wildlife images ever captured.
Only one in 40,000 humpback whales is born without normal pigmentation. The photograph of Mahina swimming beside her mother won the 2026 World Nature Photographer of the Year prize for its clarity. The image carries scientific value beyond the aesthetic: white humpbacks are so rare that each confirmed individual represents meaningful data about the genetic conditions that produce albinism in large marine mammals. The rarity of the shot and the rarity of the subject are not unrelated.

New Tech

Four gadgets that landed this week
Light Phone Flip ($299). A minimalist flip phone with 5G and a physical keypad — and no touchscreen, browser, email, social feeds, or advertising. It is the first genuinely modern hardware option for people who want to own a phone rather than be owned by one.
BodyPark ATOM. A pocket-sized AI fitness camera that watches your form, counts your reps, delivers real-time voice coaching, and generates workout plans based on your goals and available equipment. The premise is a personal trainer in your pocket that you do not need to schedule.
Garmin CIRQA. A screen-free fitness band that tracks health, sleep, and workouts for up to ten days on a single charge with no subscription required. The screen-free design is a deliberate choice rather than a cost-saving measure — notifications do not interrupt the measurement.
Terra Kaffe Demi. A compact automatic espresso machine that brews from whole beans across espresso, lungo, Americano, and drip, with a built-in self-cleaning system. Sized for kitchens where a full-size machine would take over the counter.

Five things people are actually watching and sharing
✈ Lost and found. An autonomous underwater sonar drone has identified the wreck of a Pan Am passenger plane that disappeared in 1952, giving the world its first clear look at the aircraft more than seven decades after it vanished. The combination of the historical gap and the technology that closed it is the detail making it spread.
👶 Baby Bryan. Anti-aging entrepreneur Bryan Johnson claims to have cloned himself as a newborn to one day provide replacement organs on demand. It is not a real baby. The experiment has generated significant discussion, mostly focused on the question of where exactly the line is between ambitious science and performance.
👀 Look again. A billboard installed near Meta's London headquarters uses lenticular imaging to show two entirely different messages depending on the angle at which you see it. From one direction, it shows Meta's AI smart glasses campaign. From another, a pointed privacy critique. The craft involved in making the illusion work at billboard scale is the reason it keeps circulating.
🐲 Double take. Glasgow residents woke to what appeared to be a massive dragon soaring over the city at dawn. The real explanation is almost as impressive as the illusion, and considerably less alarming for Scottish livestock.
🌍 Gravity glitch. Earth's gravitational field is not uniform — it has weak spots and strong spots distributed across the globe. A visualization that exaggerates those variations 10,000 times turns the planet into something that looks more like a lumpy gourd than a sphere. The comment sections are split between geophysicists explaining the mechanism and everyone else having a mild existential moment.
