3 robotics developments worth your next 90 seconds

1  Shanghai's Run Robotics debuted a centaur robot at WAIC 2026, built for hazardous environments no wheeled vehicle or biped can reach alone.

The design is unusual enough that it stopped the conference floor: a four-wheel all-terrain chassis with a full human-like upper body mounted on top. Run Robotics built it to carry up to 265 pounds, navigate rough terrain, and operate equipment in environments that would kill or injure a human worker — steel mills, oil fields, and nuclear facilities. The centaur configuration solves a real engineering problem: wheeled robots handle terrain, bipeds handle tools and manipulation, and this tries to do both in one chassis. See the design in action.

2  Travis Kalanick's robotics startup Atoms raised $1.7B from a16z and Uber, with the company targeting mining and physical world automation.

Kalanick describes Atoms as building a "wheelbase for robots" — an operating layer for the physical world, built on top of his ghost kitchen venture Cloud Kitchens. The round is led by a16z with Uber as a participating investor, reuniting Kalanick with the company that removed him from the CEO role in 2017. Whatever the personal dynamics, both parties apparently see enough upside in the physical automation thesis to write the cheque.

3  Johnson and Johnson's Ottava surgical robot received FDA marketing authorization, entering a market Intuitive Surgical has held alone for two decades.

Intuitive Surgical's da Vinci system is the category-defining product in robotic surgery — and Ottava is now cleared to compete with it. The distinguishing feature is physical: Ottava's robotic arms integrate directly into the operating table, taking up 30 to 50 percent less floor space than da Vinci. That design decision opens robotic surgery to hospitals that could not previously accommodate the equipment footprint. A smaller system that reaches more facilities is a different kind of competitive threat than a technically superior one.

Two places robots are doing unexpected work this week

In the kitchen. A humanoid robot in Xinjiang completed basic cooking operations — grilling kebabs and stretching hand-pulled noodle dough — after less than a week of training. Both tasks require continuous force adjustment and real-time tactile feedback that have historically been difficult for robots to manage. The performance gap with a trained human chef is still substantial, but every public demo generates training data that narrows it. Watch the session here.

On the battlefield. Foundation Future Industries, a robotics company backed by Eric Trump as chief strategy advisor and investor, is developing its Phantom humanoid for military applications, including lethal capabilities it plans to demonstrate in the coming months. The company has already tested the robot with Ukrainian forces. Robotics experts are consistent in their assessment: autonomous combat robots that function reliably in unstructured battlefield environments remain at least a decade away from practical deployment. The gap between demo and field capability is the part these announcements consistently skip.

Five moves shaping the robotics landscape

Digit vs. Optimus. Agility Robotics is opening a 60,000-square-foot robot training facility in Fremont, California — directly adjacent to Tesla's primary factory. The location is not accidental.

Neura's backers. Neura Robotics has secured $1.4B from Nvidia, Amazon, Qualcomm, and Tether. The investor list is as much a signal as the amount — each company has a specific reason to want humanoid robotics to work.

Samsung reorganizes. Samsung has created a dedicated robotics division that reports directly to its CEO, with new global research hubs to follow. A structural reorganization that puts robotics at the top of the reporting chain is a meaningful statement about priorities.

VW goes deeper in China. Volkswagen is expanding its Horizon Robotics partnership to accelerate Level 3 self-driving development in China, targeting vehicle availability by 2027.

Optimus comes home. A decompile of Tesla's iOS app reveals permissions for spatial data collection, robot alerts, and Bluetooth pairing — suggesting the company is building toward Optimus home deployment through the same app infrastructure already on every Tesla owner's phone.

A flood victim was lifted to safety by a quadcopter drone while 130,000 people were evacuated around them.

When Typhoon Maysak submerged much of Guangxi under several feet of water — with rainfall reaching 35 inches in just a few days — conventional rescue methods could not reach everyone. China's state media captured footage of a flood victim being strapped into a harness and lifted clear of the water by a large quadcopter drone operating in active storm conditions. The rescue is striking not just as a single moment but as a demonstration of what large autonomous drones can do in disaster scenarios where roads, boats, and helicopters are all constrained. Over 130,000 people were evacuated across the region during the storm.
