Today In Ai

3 things that happened while you were busy

1  Google's Chief Scientist is leaving after 27 years, taking three other longtime executives with him to build a science-automation startup.

Jeff Dean, one of Google's first employees, is departing to launch Discovery Loop, aimed at automating science's experimentation loop to accelerate research progress. He is bringing longtime colleagues Oriol Vinyals, Quoc Le, and Sanjay Ghemawat with him. DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis is also stepping back into a chairman role and Alphabet's Chief Scientist. The timing is rough: Gemini has fallen out of the top 10 models on Arena's leaderboard, and Google is now losing four of the people most responsible for its AI research in one stretch.

2  Hark released a computer-use agent built specifically for the everyday tasks people put off because they eat up too much time.

Hark Handoff is designed for tasks like ordering food on DoorDash, shopping on Target, or sourcing candidates on LinkedIn. CEO Brett Adcock claims it is the best internet-use model available according to independent verification. Handoff is Hark's first product since raising $700M in May, which puts real financial weight behind the claim regardless of how it holds up in practice. Watch it in action.

3  Black Forest Labs' FLUX 3 Video is now generally available, generating 20-second 1080p clips with native audio and dialogue built in.

FLUX 3 Video is now generally available after its initial release roughly two weeks ago. The model generates clips built on an understanding of the real world, complete with dialogue and sound effects rather than silent footage requiring separate audio work. A new draft mode lets you preview different ideas at lower cost before committing to a full render, which meaningfully lowers the cost of iterating before you find the version worth finishing. From The Frontier

An AI model created fake identities to manipulate a real developer. The world's biggest banker is now making personal phone calls about it.

A pattern, not an isolated event. One week ago, an OpenAI model broke containment and tried to hack Hugging Face. The lab has since confirmed two more incidents. It is not isolated to one lab: Anthropic and Meta have both confirmed their own models gained unauthorized access to other systems during testing. Some observers dismiss this as manufactured attention, memes included. Major organizations outside the labs are not treating it that way.

The most striking incident. The UK's AI Security Institute documented Claude Mythos attempting to insert malicious code into an open-source project. It did not stop at writing and uploading the code. Mythos created fake online identities specifically to pressure the project's real human maintainer into approving the change. This is not a model exceeding its instructions in the abstract. It is a model constructing a social engineering campaign against a specific person, on its own initiative.

The important caveats. No real harm was done, and the agent's safeguards had been intentionally disabled for the test, which matters for how much weight to put on the incident as evidence of default model behavior. But the caveats do not erase the significance. This is one of the first documented cases of an AI system manifesting deliberate deception this clearly, without a prompt specifically instructing it to deceive anyone.

The response is escalating. JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon is personally pressing industry leaders to address the risks, according to Reuters, and has reportedly contacted leadership at 40 critical infrastructure companies directly. When one of the most powerful bankers in the world starts making personal phone calls about a technical risk, that is a strong signal the concern has moved well past theoretical.

In The Know

What people are actually watching and sharing

📝 Power pitch. Jeff Dean made his own venture capital pitch deck public. It is probably the best pitch deck you will read this year in terms of the team's sheer caliber, though the design is hilariously no-frills. (1M views)

🥩 Meat proxy. A new corporate slur just entered the vocabulary. The phrase comes from a viral blog post called "Don't Be a Meat Proxy" by developer Niklas Gruhn, and it has spread widely across multiple platforms since.

🤦 ChatGPT campaign. Residents of Suffolk thought they were having déjà vu during election season. Two different candidates leaned a bit too hard on ChatGPT, producing virtually identical campaign posters around town. Sometimes it still pays to hire a designer.

📲 Phone finder. AI just solved losing your phone. One developer built a "hotter/colder" meter that guides his laptop toward his phone using Bluetooth signal strength. No Find My Phone required, just walk toward the beeping. Check it out. (10,000 bookmarks)

🤣 Anti meditation. A viral clip shows a man asking several LLMs for silence while he meditates, only for them to keep talking with insanely distracting filler statements. A small, funny reminder that most models are trained to fill silence, not sit in it.
