1  Astronomers confirmed an atmosphere on a nearby rocky planet in the habitable zone, the first time all three markers for life have appeared on the same world.

LHS 1140b has been one of the most closely watched exoplanet candidates for years. It sits in its star's habitable zone, it has the right surface temperature, and it is rocky. What it lacked was the third confirmation: an atmosphere. Astronomers have now detected one. No other planet outside our solar system has all three characteristics confirmed simultaneously. That does not mean life exists there — the composition of the atmosphere and many other questions remain open — but it makes LHS 1140b the most credible target for further investigation in the search for life beyond Earth.

Japan's RV-X experimental vehicle completed a sub-minute test flight at the Noshiro Testing Center, lifting off and returning safely to the ground in a milestone landing that occurred one day after China's Long March 10B booster completed its own first successful vertical recovery. In clinical trials Lipfendra cut LDL by up to 60% with minimal reported side effects. At $315 a month it is now available to adults at elevated risk of heart disease — the leading cause of death globally.

Sugar forms the structural backbone of DNA and RNA, making it essential to every form of life scientists have ever encountered. How it arrived on early Earth has been an open question. A new detection of a sugar molecule in the interstellar medium — the vast cloud of dust and gas drifting between star systems — suggests these molecules may be common throughout the galaxy rather than a rare accident of Earth's chemistry. If so, the conditions that made life possible here may be considerably less unique than previously assumed.

Skin as a sensor. Scientists developed a conductive ink that can be painted directly onto skin and dries in under ten minutes, forming a thin electrode that monitors heart, muscle, and brain activity during normal movement. Unlike conventional medical patches that create small gaps between sensor and skin and lose signal during motion, the painted electrode settles into the microscopic grooves of the skin for consistent contact. It can also be mixed with food coloring and applied as decorative designs, which makes long-term monitoring more acceptable for children.

Printing tissue in orbit. Scientists bio-printed human kidney, liver, and cartilage tissue aboard the International Space Station for the first time. In microgravity, without downward pull during printing, cells distribute more evenly throughout the tissue — solving one of bioprinting's most persistent engineering problems. The tissues are not yet transplantable, but the mission establishes that orbit may be the most suitable manufacturing environment for complex biological structures that cannot be produced reliably on the ground.

Flat-pack rescue. When Typhoon Maysak submerged a Chinese university campus under five meters of floodwater, conventional rescue boats could not keep pace with the scale of the emergency. China deployed three self-propelled pontoon barges capable of carrying more than 500 passengers per trip, each assembling on-site in ten minutes. All students and staff were evacuated safely within a day. The engineering model, modular components that ship flat and assemble at the emergency site, is the part most relevant to how disaster response scales.
