Today In Ai

1.  Microsoft tells employees to stop using Claude Fable.  Microsoft has removed Fable 5 from its internal systems over data retention rules: conversations are stored for 30 days, and flagged content for up to two years. The model has also faced criticism for safety classifiers that block prompts on biology, chemistry, cybersecurity, and model distillation.

2.  Anthropic's CEO calls for binding AI regulation.  In a rare personal essay, Dario Amodei argues that AI progress is outpacing political frameworks and pushes for mandatory third-party testing of frontier models. He outlines five areas of policy that need rethinking for an AI world. Read the full essay.

3.  Google open-sources a model that writes 4X faster.  DiffusionGemma takes a different approach to text generation: instead of predicting one word at a time, it generates 256 tokens in parallel for up to 4X faster inference on dedicated GPUs. Could be a big deal for anything that needs real-time AI output. Learn more here.

From The Frontier

Paying the bill.  The days of using AI to rewrite the same email five times might be ending. Sam Altman said some customers now treat AI budgeting as a huge issue, something that wasn't even on the radar last year. The real problem isn't overspending. It's spending blindly, with no clear sense of what AI is actually returning in productivity or profit.

Blind spending.  Throughout 2025, companies pushed employees to experiment freely with AI, and many got carried away. Top firms now spend $7,500 per employee per month on AI. OpenClaw creator Peter Steinberger burned through $1.3M in tokens by himself in a single month. The 2025 message was experiment freely. In mid-2026, the purse strings are tightening.

Getting selective.  One way to cut spend dramatically: model routing, or using cheaper models for easier tasks. Building an internal tool probably needs your most powerful model. Drafting a weekly status report does not. Companies can build routing logic into workflows, or simply teach employees how to use AI more efficiently.

Going on-device.  Dr. Olena Zhu, Head of AI Solutions at Intel, argues on-device models can run alongside cloud-based frontier models to cut costs. Her take: while everyone chases bigger cloud models, the real advantage may be the on-device control layer. AI spending isn't disappearing, it's just facing more scrutiny.
